Atlanta Struck by Tornado

(Atlanta 11:30 PM)   An apparent tornado struck downtown Atlanta around 9:30 pm Friday night. The metropolitan Atlanta area has a population of nearly five million people and hundreds of thousands of additional visitors were in the direct area where the storm struck, as they attended the SEC basketball tournament, a home show, an NBA game at Phillips arena and other events.

The roof of the Georgia Dome was damaged slightly as were panels of the building. The symbolic torches at the Olympic Park also were damaged. CNN Center reported heavy damage. Several major buildings including some of the tallest skyscrapers south of New York had significant damage. As of the time of this report nearly one hundred individuals had been taken to local hospitals but there were no reported fatalities.
